Founded in 1923, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) is a subsidiary organization under Kiang Wu Hospital Charitable Association (KWHCA) evolving from the former Kiang Wu Nursing and Midwifery School through a long and tortuous development period of over eighty years, an accumulative process of taking trouble and efforts by numerous people.
In 1945, KWH Director Ke Lin took up the position as schoolmaster performing more and more rigorous student education management that facilitated the nursing school¡¦s rapid growth. In 1956, the brothers Mr. Ho Tim and Mr. Ho Yin donated to fund construction of a ¡§Cheng-Kai Memorial Hall¡¨ as the school location which has remained since.
In 1991, the school started to recruit graduates from senior secondary schools and in the meantime got partial financial support from the government thus its teaching condition was able to improve in the following years. In 1994, the academic qualification was verified by the government. In 1997, a ¡§Higher Diploma in Nursing Programme¡¨ was developed and started to run in 1998 subsequent to the evaluation and approval by a validation panel composed of international nursing specialists. In November 1999, the College was recognized by the government as a private higher education institution. On November 16 the same year, the school was upgraded to ¡§Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau¡¨ and this has marked a new page for the higher nursing education in Macau ever since.
In view of the increasing needs in our developing society, the quality of nursing care has to be enhanced; therefore a Bachelor Degree Programme in Nursing is a must to meet the trend of the times. In September 2002, approved by Macao SAR government, the College opened up the ¡§Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programme¡¨. To enable the curriculum to be in line with the international standard, nursing education experts from United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil and Hong Kong were invited to conduct validation studies on the BSN Programme within the College in December 2002. In order to dedicate to the training of a great many advanced specialist nurses, the College launched a ¡§Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing (PDAN) Programme¡¨ in collaboration with the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong in 2008, following which in 2010, a ¡§Master of Nursing Science (MNS) Programme¡¨ has been running under cooperation with Sun Yat-Sen University for further raise of nursing education to an upper level.
KWNC puts emphasis on humanistic care and multicultural education cultivating qualified nursing students with both excellent character and competence; meanwhile holistic nurture of these nursing talents is also a focus in education. Prompted and supported by the Board of Directors of the College, a ¡§Benevolence Scholarship Foundation¡¨ was established in 2006 to put into practice the College¡¦s benevolent and caring notion, which has since encouraged many strong-willed youngsters to pursue studies in nursing profession and devote to the nursing career by virtue of scholarship and grants.
The College could not have grown up fast without the affiliation with our mother country and international circles. A lot of academic exchanges and cooperation projects have been fulfilled these years with universities and medical institutions from Hong Kong, Macau mainland China and overseas. Since 2005, graduating students have been given opportunities to complete exchange studies and practice outside Macau such as in Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, etc., so as to broaden their vision and absorb multi-culture.
To push forward Macau¡¦s academic research and development in nursing and health sciences, KWNC initiated a periodical ¡§Macau Journal of Nursing¡¨ in November 2001, aiming to promote the development of nursing and health sciences, to enhance the quality of nursing technique and nursing education, and to sum up the nursing development in the new epoch. In September 2004, a Newsletter ¡§The Echo of Health and Nursing¡¨ was launched to share information, to promote healthcare knowledge awareness while raising operational level in practice, to enhance and improve the relationship among departments, staff members, faculty and students while inspiring their team spirit.
For recent years, the College has undertaken a number of research projects commissioned by the SAR government, of which, the ¡§Research on the Long-Term Care Needs of the Elderly in Macao¡¨, ¡§A Ten-Year Plan for the Nursing Manpower in Macau¡¨, ¡§The Study of the Visual Acuity of Primary Students in Macao¡¨ and ¡§A Ten-Year Plan for the Community Nursing Manpower in Macau¡¨ have been fulfilled with published study reports.
The College is looking forward to carrying on cultivation of quality nursing talents as well as keeping up the efforts to push forward Macau¡¦s nursing education to a higher level. Moreover, by conducting professional training and scientific researches we will give force to back up the long-term care services in Macau.
