Over the decade of 1996 to 2006, average life expectancy of Macao residents has increased from 76.6 years to 81.5 years. In addition, from 2006 to 2010, the number of elders aged 65 or above in Macao has increased from 35,355 (7.0%) to 44,200 (8.0%). It is predicted that elders aged 65 or above will account for 15.2% of Macaoˇ¦s total population by 2021, and 19.8% by 2026. To tackle the growingly-severe problem of ageing population in Macao, it is crucial to initiate society-wide systematic education.
