Dementia Early Detection and Prevention Programme

¡§Benevolence Lights up my Later Life: A Tailored Meta-programme to Face with Ageing Population in Macau¡¨ was established by Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) in 2011. With the initiation of the Programme, the Nursing & Health Education Research Centre was set up in 2013 to provide local residents with free cognitive assessment and dementia helpline services, and which have so far gained positive feedback from the local society. In addition, KWNC joined forces with Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation and Macau Alzheimer¡¦s Disease Association to inaugurate the Memory Clinic in 2016. Assessors from the Clinic, adopting the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Hong Kong version (HK-MoCA) as assessment tool, are currently conducting dementia screening for older persons at three partnering centres, namely Centro de Dia de Mong Ha, Centro de Convivio Vivacidade and Centro de Dia ¡§Brilho da Vida¡¨ from December 2016 to June 2017. Suitable follow-up support will be recommended or offered based the screening results.

Procedures:

‣ Screening
The three centres - Centro de Dia de Mong Ha, Centro de Convivio Vivacidade and Centro de Dia ¡§Brilho da Vida¡¨ to inform the older persons about the registration. Assessors from KWNC will then offer cognitive assessment to the registered older persons using HK-MoCA and screen for potential cases that require follow-up support.

‣ Comprehensive Assessment
The screened cases will be forwarded to the Memory Clinic of KWNC and be thoroughly assessed by assessors with internationally-recognized professional qualifications.

‣ Follow-up Support
√ Case referral for diagnosis and treatment at medical institution
√ Follow-up support by KWNC students and volunteers on cognitive training
√ Support for caregivers ¡V ¡§Training Course for In-home Elderly Caregivers¡¨ offered by KWNC
